Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb ground chicken lean ground chicken works best
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 cup diced green bell pepper
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 15 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 6 pieces hamburger buns brioche or classic buns

Instructions

  • Prepare the vegetables by dicing the celery, green bell pepper, and onion.
  • Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the celery, bell pepper, and onion and cook until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, then add the ground chicken. Cook, breaking it up, until no longer pink.
  • Add the Cajun seasoning, tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar. Simmer for about 8 minutes until thick and saucy.
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto hamburger buns and serve warm.

Notes

This recipe is easy to make milder by using less Cajun seasoning for younger kids.
Ground turkey can be used instead of ground chicken.
Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and taste even better the next day.
Serve with coleslaw, pickles, or sweet potato fries for a cozy family dinner.
