Equipment

  • 1 9×13-inch baking dish Lightly greased
  • 2 Mixing bowls One for apples, one for topping
  • 1 Measuring cup set For dry and wet ingredients
  • 1 Measuring spoon set For spices
  • 1 Wooden spoon or fork For mixing topping
  • 1 Apple peeler & knife Adult supervision for kids

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 6–7 medium Baking apples Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady
  • ¼ cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoon All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon Vanilla extract

For the Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup Rolled oats Old-fashioned
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup Light brown sugar Packed
  • ½ teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ cup Unsalted butter Melted

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). I always let my little Olivia help press the oven buttons, she takes her job very seriously. Grease your baking dish while it warms.
  • In a big bowl, gently toss the sliced [apples], [sugar], [flour], [cinnamon], [nutmeg], [lemon juice], and [vanilla]. Olivia loves stirring while sneaking apple slices, just part of the process around here.
  • Spread the apples evenly into your prepared baking dish. I let Olivia smooth the top with a spoon, it may not be perfect, but that’s part of the magic.
  • In another bowl, mix [oats], [flour], [brown sugar], [cinnamon], and [salt]. Pour in the [butter] and stir until crumbly. Olivia calls this “making dessert sand.”
  • Sprinkle the crumble over the apples. Don’t press it down, loose and crumbly is exactly what we want.
  • Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbling around the edges. The house will smell like cinnamon heaven.
  • Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. We always top ours with vanilla ice cream and enjoy it curled up on the couch together.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free baked apple crumble, use gluten-free flour and certified GF oats.
  • Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat in the oven at 350°F for the crispiest topping.
  • You can make this baked apple crumble without oats by replacing oats with extra flour.
  • This is my daughter’s favorite “helping recipe”, simple, forgiving, and full of sweet memories.
